The Best Time to Fish

The best time to fish?  Early in the morning. You pour that first cup of coffee, throw a sweatshirt over your pjs, maybe brush your teeth, grab your bait, and head out the door.

I recently told my husband that early morning fishing is one of my favorite moments of being at the lake. I love waking up early, savoring that first cup of coffee, and watching the sun rise.

As a little girl, my extended family would gather at Lake of the Woods. I would beg my dad to wake me up when he, my grandpa, and uncle would take the boat out. He would remember that request and wake me up to bring me along. After a couple of hours, we’d all head back for eggs, potato pancakes, and bacon; smoke from the griddle overtaking the trailer and confident appeals that yes, my grandpa could make potato pancakes (latkes).

25 years later, I’m heading out with my own sons. Coffee, bait, and always with the confident assurance this is the morning we are going to catch walleye.

Walleye or not, it’s the joy of being on the lake, the slow troll, warmth of the sun rising, and taking in the serene beauty of all life has to offer.
